After the drawn out first two premier pilot episodes the word from critics was that the first two episodes failed to deliver due to strange filming conditions, including each episode being filmed about a year apart from each other, and that staring with episode three the series kicks into action.
Well did it deliver?
The cutesy gimmick of the hard cold blooded killer really being a highly intelligent trained chef too forced and the actor didn’t help with his inability to really sell it, and Machine Gun Blondie’s hair sure is well maintained for a post-apocalyptic war zone.
Noah Wiley was able to single-handedly keep ER alive long after it would have otherwise, but he’s that guy no matter what he’s acting in, and he doesn’t quite have the gravitas to pull off even a reluctant warrior, no matter how scruffy his beard gets, and the challenge of hunting for his kid just doesn’t resonate, we don’t even know his kid.
The action choreography of the alien vs human fist fight was pretty good, but the low budget production values left the alien looking less otherworldly and more animatronic than it should have.
The slave slaughtering scene was a decent idea, as a way for the aliens to teach the humans a lesson about coming after them, but it’s execution was hilarious, “NOOOOO!”
Overall the episode was really no different from the first two, maybe paced a bit better, but the core content was still just as cheap, and less engaging than even that other post-apocalypse slice of life Jericho. And why was the guy from Wings suddenly added to the cast, not enough mediocre leading men on the show already?
